Paper vs Pad: Why You Need Both for Proper Oil Filtration

ree

One of the most common oil filtration questions we’re asked is, “Can I just filter using the paper?”

It sounds simple enough, after all, the paper does collect a lot of the visible debris. But in reality, paper alone can’t give you the level of filtration your oil needs to stay clean, consistent, and long-lasting.

At Premier1 Filtration, our systems are built around a two-stage process for a reason. Each stage does a different job, and both are essential if you want your oil to perform at its best.

What the Paper Actually Does

Filtration paper is the first stage.

Its job is straightforward... catch the bigger bits. Batter flakes, crumbs, heavier particles — the things you can see floating in the oil. If those aren’t removed, they burn, break down and turn into the very carbon that damages oil quality.

The paper protects the pad. But it doesn’t replace it.

What the Pad Does That the Paper Can’t

The pad takes over where the paper stops.

Once the larger debris is out of the way, the pad filters out the much finer particles, the microscopic carbon and residue you can’t see but can definitely taste and smell if left in your oil.

This is the stage that keeps your oil clearer for longer and maintains that consistent, clean flavour customers expect. Without the pad, oil breaks down far more quickly, becomes darker, and eventually starts to affect machine performance too.

Why Using Only Paper Causes Problems

Some operators try to skip the pad, assuming the paper will be enough. It might feel fine for a short while, but the impact builds quickly.

Carbon begins to collect inside the system, pipework clogs faster than expected, oil darkens sooner, and you end up changing your oil more often than you should. What feels like a shortcut ends up costing time, money, and food quality.

The honest truth is simple... paper catches the debris, but the pad cleans the oil. You need both.

The Power of Using Them Together

When the paper and pad work as a team, that’s when you get proper filtration.

Oil lasts longer.

Food tastes better.

Waste goes down, and your filtration machine can do its job without strain.

For high-performing kitchens and consistent frying results, the two-stage system isn’t an optional extra, it’s the foundation.

And for even better results…

Our SuperPads and SuperSorb® CarbonPads take that second stage even further by removing ultra-fine carbon and neutralising unwanted flavours. They’re especially valuable in busy shops or mixed frying environments where oil works harder.

The Bottom Line

If you want cleaner oil, lower running costs, and consistent food quality, the paper and the pad need to be used together.

Paper starts the job.

The pad finishes it.

And that’s what keeps your oil, and your food,

at its best.
